Flood Defences require £1bn per year
The Environment Agency reports that 5M people in 2.4 million properties are at risk of flooding in addition to critical infrastructure including water treatment works, electricity sub stations, railways and roads, plus nearly 2,500 schools and doctors surgeries.
The agency has called for better planning and protection of housing and infrastructure. Given the apparent scale of the problem all new developments will be subject to greater scrutiny and flood risk assessment. For further details see http://www.ice.org.uk/state_of_the_nation/index.asp .
