New Ferry Terminal for Liverpool
Construction is nearing completion on this £10 million project for MerseyTravels (Merseyside Passenger Transport Authority and Executive) new ferry terminal building on Liverpool's Pier Head waterfront area.
The waterfront is a UNESCO designated World Heritage Site. The new terminal building has been specifically designed with a low profile and is set to complement its historical surroundings adjacent to the historic 3 graces. Finished in selected Portland stone the terminal building is expected to play a crucial role in serving visitors that take the Ferry to view the famous maritime mercantile city. The terminal will provide purpose built modern departure facilities for both visitors and regular commuters on the Woodside and Seacombe ferries. Thomas Consulting undertook the design of the structural steel frame of the building for our client APC Engineers Ltd. Externally, the building features stone cladding hung from the steel frame and has large areas of curtain walling to provide breathtaking views across the river. The upper floors feature spectacular cantilevers. Designed to be one of the most sustainable buildings of its type it is expected to achieve an excellent BREEAM environmental rating once completed. The building provides a departure area, ticket office, retail units and administrative areas on the ground and mezzanine floors. An open plan multi-use first floor area, with a restaurant and open terrace on the third floor is planned to provide various cultural events.
