Recycling centre

A design build project for Telford & Wrekin Services Ltd undertaken by McPhillips (Wellington) Ltd.

Thomas Consulting were approached by McPhillips (Wellington) Ltd to design the civil engineering works, which involved:

  • Design the proposed drainage for the site.
  • Design a concrete pavement construction and joint layout.
  • Design the traffic signs and road markings.
  • Design the access to adoptable standards

The site was restricted in area by the adjoining highway to the west and an existing high pressure gas main to the east. To add to the problems the service records indicated that there was a low pressure gas main within the highway verge however when the site was excavated it was found to be approximately 10.0m into the site. This required the levels to be redesigned to allow sufficient cover over the main whilst still maintaining reasonable gradients for the access.

The design work also entailed assessing existing recycling centres, discussions with Client and Telford & Wrekin Services Ltd drivers who would be using the site and designing a suitable ramped area within the restricted site to a raised platform at a height of 1.0m to allow vehicles and cars with trailers to deposit rubbish into the skips.

To determine the vehicular movements Thomas Consulting utilised AutoTrack with in-house modifications to produce a simulation of a car and 2.0m long trailer as indicated.
