Lyreco

Thomas Consulting were pleased be appointed by international stationery and office suppliers, Lyreco, to provide civil and structural engineering services on both phases 1 and 2 of their UK headquarters and main distribution depot.

Located on 35 acres of the former Granville Colliery in Telford, Shropshire, the headquarters was the most significant business development in Telford for more than a decade. Phase 1, a £28 million 630,000 sq. ft. building, large enough to house 11 jumbo jets, plus a 4 storey office accommodation block was completed in 2001. The complex and difficult conditions on the Brownfield site required detailed investigation of ground conditions and past industrial usage before construction work could commence. The site was then remediated and reclaimed and ground improvement techniques including grouting and dynamic compaction were employed. The development of such a large site required detailed assessment of land drainage and local highway issues. We liaised throughout with the statutory agencies to obtain the necessary consents and approvals within the design programme. A substantial drainage scheme, that includes retention and attenuation measures, was required to deal with surface water runoff.

Following the successful completion of Phase 1, Lyreco commissioned us again in 2003 as their civil and structural engineering consultants for the Phase 2 development. This was completed at the end of 2004 and provides Lyreco with a further 50,000 sq. m. of factory floor space.

Thomas Consulting provided engineering advice from concept through to completion for both phases. of the development. We are justifiably proud that our dedication and high standard of service provision on Phase 1 brought about a continuing relationship with Lyreco for a further major development in Phase 2.
