St. Cuthbert’s Church, Preston
The Architect for this project was Wood Associates, Preston and the contractor was Conlon Construction
At the beginning of the first World War construction work on the original St. Cuthbert’s Church building was brought to a halt because of a shortage of building materials. This also meant that much of the construction work was hurriedly completed resulting in significant damp and weatherproofing problems that have plagued the building for more than 90 years. Because of increasing maintenance and running costs and the fact that the old building no longer met the needs of 21st. Century parishioners it was decided to rebuild the church.
Thomas Consulting were appointed to advise on the structural aspects of the new building. We were able to suggest savings in construction by assessing and re-using some of the original foundations. The large open plan area necessitated the use of a steel frame structure, the building also includes a full immersion baptism pool.
The new building provides a striking enhancement to the street scene as well as providing the congregation with a warm and modern building suitable for their needs.
